Police volunteers honoured
MORE than 100 people gathered at the Kings Centre in Eastbourne to honour police volunteers from across East Sussex at a special awards ceremony.
The celebration event was in recognition of the hard work, dedication and support that volunteers offer the division across a number of departments, including Crime Reduction, Neighbourhood Policing, Domestic Violence, Canteen Assistance and Chaplaincy.
Special guests presenting the awards were Lord Lieutenant Peter Field and High Sheriff Bill Shelford, as well as Sussex Police Authority Chairman, Dr Laurie Bush, Chief Superintendent Robin Smith, and Superintendent Samantha Coates.
The East Sussex Division has the highest number of volunteers - 71 out of the 152 volunteers forcewide, and also has the largest number of long serving volunteers. Awards presented at the event included the 2 Years Appreciation Awards, 5 Years Appreciation Awards, Independent Custody Awards, Volunteer Special Awards, and the Force Long Service Volunteer Awards.
Chief Superintendent Robin Smith, Divisional Commander, said, "We are very fortunate to have such a high number of dedicated volunteers who are willing to give up their precious time to help staff and officers in serving Sussex.
"I'd like to thank our volunteers sincerely on behalf of the wider community for the vital support and contributions they offer us all."
A special presentation for 'Volunteer of the Year' was made to George Gibbs, 82, East Sussex Police's Volunteer co-ordinator, who recruits volunteers for the Division.
"It's great to receive an award like this - people think that because you're old, you've lost it! It goes to show, age doesn't matter - you can still keep going!"
George has been volunteering for seven years at Sussex Police, and also volunteers at the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Bill Shelford presented 2 Years Service Appreciation Awards to Eastbourne volunteers at Grove Road and Hammonds Drive, Bill Applin, Jan Newens, Mark Rosser, Wealden volunteer Val Townsend and 5 Year Appreciation Awards to Eastbourne volunteers at Grove Road and Hammonds Drive, June Bray-Still, Eric Coppin and Margaret Neill.
