Police investigate seafront blaze
A BLAZE destroyed a seafront building in Eastbourne on Monday morning.
Fire ripped through the single storey lock-up next to the skate park behind the Sovereign Centre on Monday morning.
The building is owned by Eastbourne Borough Council and rented out to the Eastbourne Workingmen’s Club in Firle Road.
Fire crews and police were called to the fire at 6.30am after concerned residents raised the alarm when they saw smoke billowing from the building.
The area was cordoned off as firefighters kept the blaze under control for more than two hours.
The building is believed to have been used to store jet skis but it is not known exactly what was inside.
Council contractors arrived at the scene early on Monday morning to keep the site secure and fencing was put up later in the day to stop people climbing into the wreckage.
John Fotherby, secretary at the workingmen’s club said, “It is too early for us to say what happened yet.
“I got a phone call first thing Monday morning and we are still trying to work out what happened.”
Sussex Police is currently investigating the cause of the blaze.
