Police crackdown against thieves in Hailsham

POLICE officers were out in force in Hailsham last week in a crackdown on thieves.

The day of action was carried out to combat thefts of tools and garden equipment from sheds and outbuildings.

Officers went into specific areas across Hailsham in teams on Wednesday, February 1, where they door-knocked every home in the street.

The police then offered to security mark any valuables stored in sheds and garages.

Wealden District Commander, Chief Inspector Dick Coates said, “One of the key aims of neighbourhood policing is to prevent crime by showing a visible presence in the community.

“This is another innovative way that we are implementing across Wealden to reduce thefts of this type.

“Not only does marking property deter thieves, it can also help us in finding a loser when we recover stolen items, therefore assisting us in bringing criminals to justice quicker.”

Sussex Police hailed the day as an “overwhelming success” with officers adding a security mark to more than 1,000 items of property.

A further 100 residents signed up to receive community messages by email.

Officers also discussed with residents the possibility of joining a local Neighbourhood watch scheme and the Wealden police community messaging system.

Two officers also visited four primary schools in Hailsham where they security marked pupils’ bicycles.

Due to an increase of thefts of mobile phones from hairdressers across Kent and Sussex, one officer visited all hair salons in Hailsham and put mobile phones onto the immobilise website.

Immobilise is the world’s largest free register of possession ownership details.

Millions of users have phones, bikes, computers, gadgets and other valuables registered on the website, whose details can be found at: www. immobilise.com/
