Police car catches fire near Polegate
A POLICE car caught fire on the A27 near Polegate on Thursday evening (August 21). Officers were responding to an emergency call when their vehicle overheated on the corner of Folkington Lane, causing a fire which destroyed the car.
A Sussex Police spokesperson said, "The two officers inside the car noticed smoke entering the cabin and took the decision to stop the vehicle and remove as much equipment as possible.
"While they were doing this flames started to appear from the bonnet area and the officers withdrew to a safe distance."
The fire broke out at around 7.30pm and fire fighters rushed to the scene and took just under an hour to put out the blaze.
A spokesperson from East Sussex Fire and Rescue said crews were advised there was ammunition in the car but police later confirmed that all firearms had been removed.
Sussex Police say the fire is not being treated as suspicious but an investigation into the cause has been launched.
No-one was hurt and the car was recovered but the road between Drusillas Park and Polegate was closed for most of the evening.
