Residents in Seaford could see a further 35 homes created in the town centre after plans to build a development near the railway station were submitted.

Lewes District Council has received a planning application to build on the site of The Old House Depository situated between Claremont Road and Station Approach. The proposal, by Cross Stone Homes based in Crowborough, includes 26 house maisonette hybrid properties with gardens and nine affordable flats. The houses fronting Claremont Road would be three storey with those on Station Approach having a lower ground (below street level) ground and first floors and would therefore appear as two storey houses from Station Approach.

Ross Barbour, managing director of Cross Stone Homes, said, “There was originally consent on the site for 56 apartments but with the change in the economy apartments are not selling as well and are more expensive to build so that scheme is no longer viable. Instead our scheme is for two rows of terraced houses fronting onto Station Approach and Claremont Road with courtyard gardens between with a separate block of nine affordable apartments. There will be an underground car park providing 63 parking spaces so the scheme will not put additional pressure on Seaford’s on street parking.”

The depository closed in 2006 and was demolished two years ago. The site was cleared of buildings and is currently used for car sales, by a company with a sales outlet on the opposite side of Claremont Road.

Seaford Town Council is due to discuss the plans on November 22 before a decision is made by Lewes District Council.
