Pevensey Bay hoping to welcome Olympic torch

A PETITION calling for the Olympic Torch to be carried through Pevensey Bay has already been signed by 70 villagers.

The landlord of the Beach Tavern Pub, Stephan Ritchie, has started the campaign and will present the petition to Pevensey Parish Council in the hope councillors will give it their backing and pass it on to London 2012 organisers.

The Olympic Flame will come to Eastbourne on July 17, giving the community the chance to share in the excitement of the Relay and celebrate the achievements of the torchbearers.

Currently, the torch will go through Eastbourne and then on to Pevensey Bay for around 4pm.

However, the Herald understands the vehicle convoy will stop in the lay-by just outside the village and then the torch will be driven down the road by the closed HSBC bank, bypassing the high street.

Stephan said, “I was going to have an event at the pub but there is no point if it is not coming down the High Street.

“It seems a real shame because the people of Pevensey Bay and all the businesses will not be involved.

“It would mean a lot to the village if it could come down the High Street because it is not just about London but about the smaller places across Britain too.

“It would be nice if we could be part of that great experience.

“We are called Great Britain for a reason and we all want to part of the celebrations.”

The petition calls on Olympic organisers to allow a torch bearer to parade through the centre of Pevensey Bay so the people of the village can enter into the spirit of the occasion.

The petition is available to sign at the pub in Pevensey Bay and Stephan is hoping to get as many signatures as possible.
