Peace Garden idea is cultivating support
A SCHEME which will see a Peace Garden developed in Seaford is gaining momentum.
More than 30 people turned out a meeting this month to hear about the project and the latest developments.
Work is hoped to begin on the Peace Garden, which will be created within Crouch Gardens, next spring.
In December 2007 the Community Services Committee of Seaford Town Council agreed to a proposal from Seaford Quaker Meeting that a Peace Garden should be created at The Crouch and later approved detailed proposals for establishing it in the current rose garden.
STC has since agreed to maintain the Peace Garden once it is completed.
Seaford Quakers have raised around two-thirds of the overall cost and are keen to get other interested groups and individuals on board to broaden the base for further fundraising.
Jack Barnes from Seaford Quakers said, "We held the meeting to invite others to get some moral support and see if they are interested.
"We are looking for the remaining third of the money to include going towards putting more seating in."
The Peace Garden will include a peace statue and there are also plans to slightly modernise the area.
Mr Barnes was at the special meeting along with Seaford resident Lindsay Thomas, who has designed the Peace Garden and Christian Funnell, who has designed the Peace Statue.
The pair were able to explain their designs and answer questions from all members of the public.
Lindsay said of the meeting, "I think it was very well received, all the questions were very positive and seemed to be supportive of the idea of the Peace Garden."
