PCSO vows to tackle antisocial youths

PEVENSEY'S new community support officer has been praised by a parish councillor after he announced he was addressing alcohol related antisocial behaviour in the village.

PCSO Jamie Harwood attended a parish meeting recently and chair of Pevensey Parish Council, Cllr John Grout, asked him about 'persistent' antisocial behaviour at Pevensey Castle.

PCSO Harwood explained many of the youths responsible arrived by train.

He said, "During term time the kids use it as a meeting place so we will be stopping young people at the station, asking to see their train ticket and if they haven't got one we will be reporting them to British Transport Police.

"We will also be confiscating any alcohol they may have."

He told councillors a letter would be sent to their parents and some may be called into the police station.

PCSO Harwood has also sent letters to all homes in Coast Road and Waverley Gardens.

"We found that some of the residents, especially those of the older generation, were concerned about coming forward and letting us know which kids are causing a problem.

"They were worried a police car would turn up at their house and the kids would see and then target them," said PCSO Harwood.

"We want to assure them that is not the case and any information is useful to us."

He also told councillors he had received complaints from residents about cyclists on the pavement along Eastbourne Road, Pevensey Bay.

Posters stating bikes are not allowed will be put on lampposts and PCSO Harwood will be stopping any cyclists on the pavement and reminding them of the law.

Cllr Shirley Clark thanked him for his efforts in the village. She said, "I have knocked the police in the past but at the moment I am extremely impressed so thank you Jamie for all your hard work."
