Parking shake-up planned for town
A major overhaul of the town’s unpopular pay to park scheme is on the cards which will see restrictions spreading out across Eastbourne.
Hampden Park, Meads and roads near to the DGH which currently have no parking restrictions will have new controls, and countless roads in the town centre will be changed to time limited zones or permit holder only bays.
They are being suggested in a bid to ease parking problems in residential areas near the hospital and the university as well as stop commuters parking outside shops all day.
The changes – if given the go ahead in January – will also see more double yellow lines but on the plus side the vast majority of loading only bays which are enforced 24 hours seven days a week will be changed to 8am-6pm Monday to Saturday instead.
East Sussex County Council which operates the controversial scheme says the changes are the result of a lengthy consultation and people’s views and opinions have helped parking officials develop the scheme.
But anti pay to park campaigners say residents and businesses who asked for changes haven’t got them and those that did not will see unpopular changes.
Eastbourne Borough Council’s Liberal Democrats are calling for the changes to be either significantly altered or scrapped along with the town centre neighbourhood panel which has called into question the effectiveness of the consultation.
Councillor Steve Wallis said, “These new proposals are causing real anger and I am not surprised as the inclusion of double-yellow lines in many roads will result in approximately 100 spaces being lost in areas where parking is already a problem for residents.”
People now have until Sunday to voice their objections and a final decision will be made by the county council in January with changes introduced in early spring.
