Parking shake up means new bus stops
New bus stops are to go up in Eastbourne’s Grove Road and South Street as part of the parking shake up.
It is planned to install two stops in Grove Road and one in South Street which will be served by the number 3 bus run by Stagecoach.
The proposal is currently under consultation and East Sussex County Council, which is behind the move, could give the plan the green light early next year.
A spokesperson at the county council in Lewes, which is responsible for the highways in Eastbourne and the controversial parking scheme, said, “Following requests from the local community, Stagecoach has agreed to extend the number three bus service to Grove Road and South Street.
“This proposal has the support of local people, businesses and the bus company. We are also supporting the change which would require three new bus stops - two in Grove Road and one in South Street. As the Eastbourne parking review was taking place and the bus stops were in roads where changes to parking were proposed, we included the proposals in the review so that people could have their say.
“The deadline for objections was on Sunday and we will now look at all the responses before presenting a report to the planning committee. If the proposals, including the bus stops, are approved, we will be implementing them before the spring of 2013. We understand that some people would like to see them introduced sooner, but it is important to take all people’s views into account.”
The new bus stops are only part of a radical shake up of the parking scheme which is currently being considered by the county council.
The changes, if given the go ahead will see more controlled parking in Meads, Hampden Park and the town centre, more pay and display bays, additional time limited parking, more permit holder only bays across the town and an increase in double yellow lines borough wide.
East Sussex County Council says the changes are down to requests from visitors and shopkeepers.
But opponents say the proposals are causing anger among residents and businesses and are calling for changes.
They say people who asked for changes in their roads didn’t get them and those that didn’t have been landed with unpopular restrictions.
