Parents set up charity after local Autistic Society closure

LAST month's closure of the Sussex Autistic Society has prompted parents in the county to set up their own charity to provide help and support for people coping with autism.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them. One in every 100 people has autism.

They find it difficult to tell people what they need, and how they feel. They find it difficult to meet other people and to make new friends. And they find it difficult to understand what other people think.

The new organisation, Families for Autism Limited, reflects the fact that all families involved live with autism 24/7. It aims to register with the Charity Commission as soon as enough funds are available.

Chief executive Mark Jones said, "As a start, the new organisation will be re-opening a Saturday club catering for school age children on the spectrum and their siblings and a youth club for the older age range.

"A wide range of activities are to be provided within these clubs such as soft play, outdoor play, cookery, art, computers, multi sensory and life and social skills.

"We also plan to offer social outings and experiences.

"Whilst these clubs take place, parents and other family members are able to benefit from valuable respite time."

Mr Jones said the top priority for Families for Autism was to raise money for what it aims to do.

To make a donation, or to find out more – particularly families with an autistic child needing help – call Mr Jones on 07908 314102 or e-mail him at: mark.jones@familiesforautism.org.uk

The Sussex Autistic Society ceased trading on July 6, blaming "the general economic climate, the loss of West Sussex commissions and Trust donations being ever more difficult to achieve" for its insolvency.

A spokesman said, "We understand this is devastating news, especially to those who use the society's services.

"Please be assured that where possible, assistance with transition to a new service provider will be given.

"Families should also contract their social worker."

The Society's insolvency is being dealt with by Susan Maund, of Whitemaund LLP, Old Steine, Brighton.
