Palm vandalism led to court

A SEAFORD man who destroyed a palm tree in an ornamental garden has received a 12-month community order.

Andrew Guppy, of Dane Road, damaged the tree in a garden owned by Seaford Town Council which is situated off the Esplanade between West View and Dane Road.

The 21-year-old appeared at Lewes Magistrates' Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to the offence which took place on May 27.

He also pleaded guilty to one count of theft.

He was ordered to undertake 60 hours of unpaid work, pay 200 compensation for the criminal damage and 10 compensation for the theft matter.

Another offence of criminal damage, which involved damage to a Mercedes, was taken into consideration and Guppy was ordered to pay 200 compensation.

Damien Thomas, 24, of Hanson Road, Newhaven, also appeared at court charged with five counts of theft.

He pleaded guilty to all counts and was sentenced to eight weeks in prison.
