Overnight roadworks planned for A27 by Selmeston

Work began at the weekend to improve safety on the A27 near Lewes which resulted in major traffic disruption.

The road between Middle Farm and Selmeston is being resurfaced with new road markings painted, and new signs will be installed.

Improvement works began overnight on Saturday along a section of almost two miles, with initial preparatory work involving overnight lane closures and temporary taffic lights.

Weather permitting, there will be work for seven conseuctive nights replacing the kerb ahead of the main resurfacing work. There will be lane closures on alternate carriageways, and as this is a single carriageway road, temporary traffic lights will be in use on the other carriageway.

The main work will begin overnight on Monday, January 21 between 8pm and 6pm. when signed diversion will be in place via the A26 and A22.

There will be 16 overnight closures of the busy road in both directions between Polegate and Lewes durng the work.

Martin Wright, Highways Agency Asset Manager, said: “The A27 is a vital route along the south coast and this work builds on the safety improvements we have already made on this section for the 16,320 drivers who use it on average every day.

“The resurfacing will mean smoother journeys, and the further benefits include improved warning signs, solar road studs and specialised road markings which will improve safety particularly at night and in wet weather.

“We have carefully planned the work to cause as little as disruption as possible, and so it will take place overnight when traffic flows are lowest.

“But it does mean over some nights we will need to fully close the road to allow us to do the work as quickly and as safely as possible.

“The only suitable alternative route for traffic which would normally use the A27 is via the A26 – a route which has been agreed with the local authority.

“We thank drivers for their patience while we carry out this essential work and urge those affected by the diversion to leave plenty of extra time for their journeys.”
