Original Brighton Rock is screened

WITH the remake being filmed in Eastbourne, Hailsham Film Club is to screen the original version of Brighton Rock at the Pavilion next Tuesday (November 10).

This unsparing, brutal look at the British criminal underbelly stars the 24-year-old Richard Attenborough, pictured, as gang leader Pinkie Brown, who kills a man while leading his gang in a racetrack robbery.

He convinces pretty waitress Rose (Carol Marsh) to provide him with an alibi, promising to marry her in exchange.

After the wedding, the sociopathic Pinkie conducts a slow and careful campaign to drive his young wife to suicide. Adapted by Terrance Rattigan and Graham Greene, from Greene's own novel, the 1947 film was notable for bringing a new vicious realism to British crime cinema.

Doors at the Pavilion open at 7pm with the programme getting underway at 7.30pm.

All Hailsham Film Club screenings are open to non-members at normal cinema rates of 5.50 for adults, 4 for concessions and a student rate of 2.50, on production of a valid student union card.

The Pavilion has wheelchair access and hearing loop facilities.
