Open weekend offers tennis fun

DEVONSHIRE Park Lawn Tennis Club (DPLTC), the home of the summer’s international tennis tournament, is holding an open weekend on April 28-29.

The club opens its doors for the season on April 21, but will be giving prospective new members a taste a week later.

Visitors can play some tennis, enjoy drinks and even tuck into a barbecue – as well as see what DPLTC has to offer, pay subs, meet with committee members and socialise.

Ken Pollock, chairman of DPLTC, said, “Great courts, great setting, great company what could be better!

“The internationally renowned Devonshire Park grass courts provide a surface tailored for every age.

“From juniors dreaming of Wimbledon and seeking grass court experience to sports veterans seeking a surface easy on the eye and the frame.

“The lengthy list of Devonshire Park Grand Slam winners is testament to the facilities the club has to offer and with prices held for 2012 there could never be a better time to join a club where sport and sociability walk hand in hand.”

A family membership for the summer is £190 and as of 2012 student membership has been reduced from £63 to £40, in a bid to encourage young people to play.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Councillor Neil Stanley said, “We are delighted that our grass courts have put Eastbourne on the map for being graced by some of the top professional players of this world.

“Hopefully they can inspire the young people of the town to get active.”

The club also offers professional coaching facilities whatever your level, age or goals and is able to help you push members to reach their goals. Coaches there have worked alongside international tennis coaches and players visiting DPLTC for the AEGON International.
