No calling zone for village

A large part of Hampden Park is to become a No Cold Calling Zone.

The area which will be covered is the whole residential neighbourhood north from the Hydneye roundabout.

The adoption of the zone was officially launched at the Gateway Centre this week and officials say it will help combat the problem of doorstep crime.

The zone can deter unscrupulous cold callers from approaching people living in the zones, but more importantly, they can give people the confidence to say no.

The Hampden Park North No Cold Calling Zone was the brainchild of local resident and deputy chairman of the Neighbourhood Panel Keith Fillery.

He organised the initiative with Sergeant Fiona Munro from the Neighbourhood Policing Team at Eastbourne Police Station and Elizabeth Bowring from Trading Standards.

At the launch booklets detailing the rights of residents in a no cold calling zone area were given out and members of the Police Neighbourhood Team and local Neighbourhood Watch members were available to take details of any issues members of the public wished to report.

Further copies of the information pack will be available at the next meeting of the Hampden Park Neighbourhood Panel meeting on February 26 at 10am at the Railway Club in Station Approach, when all residents are welcome.

A spokesperson at East Sussex County Council’s trading standards department said, “No cold calling zones can be set up by groups of residents to deter uninvited callers. Street signs, door stickers, information packs and ways of reporting incidents can all help to give residents the confidence to ‘say no’.

“We work with other organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, Sussex Police, and parish, borough and district councils to set up no cold calling schemes in East Sussex.”

So far locally, Eversley Court, Fairfield Lodge, Queen’s Crescent, Rodmill, Shinewater, East Dean, Hankham, Pevensey, Polegate, Stone Cross, Wannock, Willingdon and Jevington and Westham are all no cold calling zones.

Wish Hill in Willingdon is currently applying to become a no cold calling zone.
