New survey shows decline in bullying

BULLIES are in decline at secondary schools across East Sussex, according to an annual survey of almost 6,000 students.

Held last November by East Sussex County Council's Anti-bullying Team, it involved pupils from 21 schools.

Significantly, 93 per cent reported feeling safe at school and 89 per cent described their school as happy and caring.

More than three-quarters – 77 per cent – had not been bullied at school, a six per cent improvement on the previous year, and more felt their schools now dealt effectively with any problems.

Name-calling remains the commonest form of bullying, though cyberbullying through social networking internet sites continues to rise.

Councillor David Elkin, East Sussex County Council's Lead Member forLearning and School Effectiveness, said, "It is great to see that young people in East Sussex feel safe at school and that the picture is improving.

"We want students to be free from fear at school and to know who to turn to if they need help."
