A FORMER plumbing apprentice is a partner in his own company - just three years into his career.

Gregg Williams, who trained at Sussex Downs College, is now a partner running his own business and employing his own apprentice.

Gregg’s Plumbing and Heating, in its second year of trading, covers a 50-mile radius from its Eastbourne base including East and West Sussex, West Kent and East Surrey.

Gregg said, “I completed a full four years at the Eastbourne campus of Sussex Downs, including my gas training which covered boilers, pipework, gas water heaters, gas cookers and gas fires.

“My apprenticeship helped me in many ways, one being that I learnt valuable skills in a trade, another being you learn valuable life skills, such as mixing with different groups and learning to help one another.

“Our apprentice, Jack, a former Bishop Bell pupil, has been with us now for four months. We are very happy with how he is progressing.

“I it is very refreshing to see a young man willing to learn and happy to get stuck in. It is also nice to see that Jack is enjoying his work.

“He gets annoyed with himself when he gets something wrong, however this shows me he has pride in what he is doing.

“As Jack is just 16 we are getting a fully-funded course through Sussex Downs College. It would have been very difficult to fund Jack’s training otherwise.

“We are proud we have been able to employ a local person, as we wanted to give something back to the young community in Eastbourne and this seemed like the perfect way.”
