New Samaritans Beachy Head sign unveiled

SAMARITANS signs have been updated at Beachy Head and funded by Hailsham Lions Club.

The main sign by the telephone box near the notorious suicide spot is now reflective and should be visible at night.

The notice in the telephone box has also been renewed and Samaritans contact details have been added to the 14 car park machines situated in the Beachy Head area.

All the new signs have been sponsored by Hailsham Lions.

Mel Eldridge, chairman of Hailsham Lions Club, said, "Hailsham Lions Club is pleased to sponsor this project to improve the Samaritans signs at Beachy Head.

"We hope that anyone thinking about ending their life will take the opportunity to make contact with Samaritans who are available day and night throughout the year."

Sandra Mitchell, director of Eastbourne Samaritans, said, "We are extremely grateful to Hailsham Lions for their generous support in upgrading and renewing our signs at Beachy Head.

"The new reflective signs are highly visible and will draw attention to our emergency telephone number – 08457 909090, which is manned day and night everyday of the year."

Those needing to talk can also visit the drop-in centre in Bolton Road, Eastbourne, which is open daily from 10.30am to 10.30pm.

Anyone wanting to volunteer as a Samariatan can attend an informal open evening on March 29 at 7.30pm.
