A new development being built in Seaford will be re-named after an historic hotel which once stood on the Dane Road site.

The area was previously home to the Beachcomber pub and demolition work got underway in September last year to make way for 51 assisted living apartments.

The history of the building goes back several centuries and retirement developer McCarthy & Stone has named the building after The Eversley Hotel, which one stood at the site and dates back to 1897.

The build, which includes one and two-bedroom assisted living apartments for people aged over 70, will be called Eversley Court.

Apartments will be available to buy off plan in April this year with first occupations taking place in December.

Julie Ward, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy & Stone, said, “We pride ourselves on building communities and not just apartments, so we always aim to select names for our new developments that will have real meaning to the local residents.

“We wanted to pay tribute to Seaford’s heritage, which the Eversley Hotel was a big part of.

“What better way to highlight this than by naming our new development after it.”

Facilities at the new build include a shared lounge, an on-site restaurant, guest suite, laundry room and a lift, with staff on site 24 hours a day.

A series of planning applications to build on the site in Dane Road have been put forward over the years and several were turned down.

In 2008 a decision to throw out plans for 88 apartments after an appeal was lodged was hailed a victory for community power.

A three-day inquiry was held to hear residents views’ and the appeal was dismissed.

But another application was approved on appeal in 2011 and was seen as a bitter blow for many residents who said it meant the end of Seaford’s last seafront pub.
