New contractor one step closer
The decision to appoint a new waste contractor for Wealden district is a step closer to being finalised this week.
Members of Wealden District Council’s cabinet committee voted in favour of contractor B - believed to be waste management company Kier. The winner of the contract for refuse, recycling and street cleaning is expected at the end of October when the other partnership councils of Eastbourne, Rother and Hastings have made their choice. The contract will begin in Wealden on April 1 2013.
No jobs are believed to be at risk through the new contract, a council spokesman said.
The councils expect the initiative to increase recycling rates by up to 50 per cent and widen the range of recyclates collected at the kerbside while reducing cost to the taxpayer.
Cllr Bob Standley, leader of the council, claimed the contract would save Wealden taxpayers more than £7.5 million over the term of the contract.
“The new joint waste contract will continue the high levels of service enjoyed by our residents,” he said. “I am pleased that all our front line operators in refuse and street cleaning will transfer to the new contractor under the TUPE regulations.”
Cllr Rowena Moore, cabinet member for waste management, said they had narrowed down 26 organisations to three companies in the last stage of the procurement process. The contract should increase Wealden’s recycling rates to more than 50 per cent.
Domestic waste and recycling will still be collected using a fortnightly cycle and the council will continue to be responsible for the delivery of the service.
