New chapter for library with second-hand bookshop

Eastbourne Library in Grove Road is to be the first public library in East Sussex to have a permanent second-hand bookshop.

East Sussex County Council’s Library & Information Service will open the bookshop in December.

The shop will be run by volunteers and will sell second-hand books, DVDs and CDs and a range of other merchandise such as greetings cards.

Councillor Tony Freebody, lead member for community services, said, “The bookshop is a wonderful idea and will allow our customers to browse the older books they may want to buy, as well as continue to borrow books for the whole family from the main library.

“Second-hand books are often sold by the Library Service when stock has reached the end of its library shelf-life.

“The new bookshop will make the experience of shopping for ex-library stock more enjoyable for our customers and will provide more income to be used to buy new books for our libraries.”

The Library Service has been running a competition to name the bookshop via its Facebook page.

The competition, which runsfor just one more day, is available via www.facebook.com/eastsussexlibraries.

To enter, people can post their suggestions on the Library Service Facebook wall preceded by the words ‘Bookshop naming competition’ – or they can pop into the Library in Grove Road and write their suggestions on the board provided.

People are also being invited to see the changes being made at the central library. “As well as installing the new shop, we’re refurbishing the foyer area and improving lighting in some areas of the library,” said Councillor Freebody.

“We’re also full refurbishing the committee room in the library which is available to hire at reduced rates for local community groups.”

To find out more, including information about the committee room, telephone Eastbourne Central Library on 0345 60 80 196.
