Neil McCrudden dons kit to help charity

EASTBOURNE footballer Neil McCrudden will don his kit one last time at the end of this season to raise money for diabetes charities as part of Football Aid.

Since 1989, ardent Liverpool FC supporter Neil McCrudden, known as 'Scouse' on the pitch has played for many of the town's football teams including Park Royal, White Knight, Central, Magham Down, Old Town and won the Eastbourne Challenge Cup several times with Shinewater FC in the mid-1990's.

At the end of the 2007/08 season Neil finally gave up playing 11-a-side but still plays recreational football locally.

In May 2010, he will join hundreds of other football fans across the country to participate in Football Aid.

The concept of Football Aid is simple – to create a unique way to raise funds for worthy causes by getting fans to raise sponsorship to experience the thrill of match day on the hallowed turf of the club they support.

Since its inception, Football Aid has raised funds for needy charities by playing more than 380 games across the country, and in 2010 all the money raised with go towards funding projects for a cure and improvement management of Diabetes.

With World Diabetes Day on November 14, Liverpool-born Neil is hoping that publicity will help him raise sponsorship.

"Diabetes is a complex and serious condition that has affected the lives of some of our friends and family and I'm aiming to raise over 700 to help find more ways of managing it, or even find a cure," said Neil.

"More than 6,000 people in Eastbourne are thought to have the condition (Type 1 and 2) – and an estimated 29,000 people across East Sussex.

"Diabetes can have a wide impact on the lives of those who live with it – including sight loss, limb amputation and reduced life expectancy.

"Playing at Anfield has been my lifelong dream – obviously I'd love to score, but to play on that pitch and touch the This is Anfield sign will be amazing.

"To know that I'm raising money for diabetes at the same time is the icing on the cake. Having given up playing a few years ago, all I have to do now is get fit enough to last."
