The principal of Sussex Downs College (SDC) admitted there was ‘still much work to be done’ following an Ofsted report which stated the college needed to improve standards in several areas.

Melanie Hunt said work in eight areas that the document said the college needed to focus on was a ‘priority’.

The report highlights a list of why the college needs to make improvements and comes after an inspection in November last year. The Learning and Skills inspection report states that the quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement. This was also the case in two other categories and the overall effectiveness was also marked as requiring improvement.

The latest report states, ‘Too many learners do not make progress they are capable of, particularly on academic courses. Teachers’ expectations of learners are not always sufficiently aspirational.

‘The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is not consistently good enough and varies too much between subject areas’.

A raft of performance reviews had praised SDC for demonstrating excellence across many areas.

MrsHunt said she was pleased with the recognition that teaching staff and students had received from many quarters, but accepted that the Ofsted report demonstrated that there was ‘still much work to be done’, adding, “The Ofsted inspectors outlined eight areas for us to focus on, and we accept their findings. Indeed, we had already identified these key challenges in our own Self-Assessment Report completed earlier this year. Our work in these areas is a priority and will continue through the rest of the academic year and into 2013/14. We must continue to equip our students with the tools they need for a successful and worthwhile career.”

A press release from the college added that the Ofsted report follows a new inspection regime that is delivering lower grades around the country.
