MS group scoops a Queen's award
The Eastbourne and South Wealden MS Society has been chosen as a winner of this year's prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
The award gives recognition to the 'stars' in our communities that play an essential role in our daily lives.
The Eastbourne and South Wealden MS Society, based in St Leonards Road, has made tremendous progress over the past few years in a great variety of ways to help MS sufferers, their families, friends and carers.
The volunteer team is made up of 90 per cent people with MS or their carers and one of their main aims is to ensure that a diagnosis of MS does not lead to exclusion or to a disadvantaged way of life.
The Eastbourne & South Wealden MS Society is one of only 71 organisations to win an award across the UK this year.
All winners have been nominated by members of the public who have either benefited from their work, or seen the positive effect on their community.
The award is only given to those groups where volunteers are judged to have regularly devoted their time to providing an outstanding level of help to other people.
Bernard Curtis, chairman of the society, said, "I am so incredibly proud of our volunteer team - particularly as most of our volunteers either have MS or they are carers.
"Despite their own circumstances they still give so much of their time and care to others. Equally this award recognises the many businesses and organisations in this town who have given so freely of their time in raising money for us and by supporting our work in the community."
Lesley Goble, chief executive of EAVS, added, "Eastbourne should be proud that the Eastbourne and Wealden MS Society has achieved the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
"To get the news during Volunteer Week is perfect timing to highlight the great contribution made by volunteers in this town, providing valuable services to local people.
"It is always rewarding to see people's achievements recognised in this way and everyone concerned should be congratulated."
The East Sussex Award will be presented on behalf of Her Majesty by the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Phyllida Stewart-Roberts, at a special ceremony to be organised within the county later in the year.
