MP’s plea for Olympians to be honoured
Stephen Lloyd
EASTBOURNE’S MP has called on the BBC to extend its Sports Personality of the Year Awards ceremony to pay tribute to Team GB’s Olympics heroics.
Stephen Lloyd has penned a letter to BBC director general Mark Thompson saying that, in the light of the success at London 2012, the event should include extra categories of Male & Female Olympian and Paralympian of the Year; in addition to the top honour of Sports Personality of the year.
Mr Lloyd said, “The recent Olympics were a once in a generation opportunity and Team GB really rose to the occasion.
“Our fantastic representatives at these games gave their all and have come back with a medal haul unprecedented in the last hundred years.
“Absolutely sensational result.
“There were so many inspirational moments from across the team which deserve recognition, I believe the public would support my call for the BBC to do something extra special in 2012; a unique year for British sport.
“In Eastbourne the enthusiasm for the Games, from the torch relay through to the closing ceremony was amazing.
“I am proud of the way our team responded to the added pressure of expectations from the home crowd and believe we must do something to recognise our wonderful sporting heroes; and I hope the BBC agree.”
