MP leaps into action to catch escaped pig
Cllr Alan Shuttleworth and MP Stephen Lloyd with an escaped pig from West Rise School
The town’s MP Stephen Lloyd leapt into action after a pig went on the run.
The animal, which is kept at West Rise Junior School in Langney, escaped from the premises into Swanley Close.
Mr Lloyd was in the area with Cllr Alan Shuttleworth and volunteers delivering letters to residents about Langney Shopping Centre.
He said, “We saw the pig rooting around in the bushes. I thought I’d seen everything in politics but this was a new one. As you’d expect for Eastbourne, all the residents calmly took it in their stride.
“One of them got me a long lead which I looped into a halter, then between us we got the pig into a corner and I dropped the halter over its head and then pulled tight.
“Wrong move; the pig shot off at a rate of knots with me in tow.”
Cllr Shuttleworth watched the drama unfold and added, “It was an interesting contest between the pig and the MP!
“But the good news was that we were able to walk the pig back to its enclosure on the school field. The school animals are really well cared for and loved by all the children.”
Headteacher Mike Fairclough said, “Our farm manager reported to me that one of our goats had chewed off a rope to the animal pen and liberated several ducks, a pig and a goat. Being a friendly and inquisitive sole, one of our pigs then decided to explore beyond the school grounds.
“We are very grateful to Stephen Lloyd for spotting and retrieving him for us. A new metal chain has now replaced the old rope and the animals are once again secure.
“The children are very impressed that one of our animals has met a Member of Parliament and hope that he enjoyed meeting our pig.”
