Missing April: Hailsham parents of arrested man tight-lipped

THE PARENTS of Mark Bridger, who is being quizzed by detectives hunting for five-year-old April Jones, were staying tight lipped at their home near Hailsham last night (Tuesday).

Graham and Pamela Bridger refused to answer the door at their retirement home at Deanland Wood Park at Golden Cross off the A22.

Their 46-year-old son was arrested yesterday in connection with the disappearance of the little girl who was abducted in Machynlleth, near Aberystwyth, at 7pm on Monday.

Neighbours of the couple said Mr and Mrs Bridger kept themselves to themselves and said they did not believe the couple were close to their son, a former soldier.

One neighbour said, “They didn’t keep in touch with him and described him as the prodigal son. He doesn’t visit them and they don’t see him.

“There’s another son that is over quite a lot.”

Neighbours said both Mr and Mrs Bridger are retired.

Meanwhile police and emergency services are continuing their search for the missing youngster, whose disappearance has hit the headlines nationally.

Supt Ian John said there was no news on April’s whereabouts but a “methodical” search was under way. He said volunteers were no longer needed.

Dyfed-Powys Police told a news conference on Wednesday they have been “overwhelmed” by the response from volunteers but now urged the public to leave the search to trained teams.
