Miraculous recovery for hip surgery cyclist
A PATIENT who had hip surgery was walking again on the same day and riding a bike 40 miles just a month later.
John Prescott, a 51-year-old from King Edward's Parade, Eastbourne, thought cycling would be a thing of the past when he learnt that he needed major surgery on his hips.
He had been a keen cyclist for 28 years, covering more than 300 miles a week, but had to have a hip operation in 2003.
His other hip then became steadily worse, he took longer to recover following exercise and was having acupuncture to cope with the pain.
Last October he decided he needed more surgery.
He went to Spire Sussex Hospital in St Leonards, where he had his operation this February under consultant orthopaedic surgeon Hugh Apthorp FRCS.
His hip resurfacing operation removed less bone than a conventional hip replacement, with the hip just re-lined, potentially saving bone for the future. It is a technique suited to younger and active patients like Mr Prescott.
On the day of surgery, he went into theatre at 9.30am. By lunchtime the operation was complete and he began taking his first steps.
He said, "It was amazing. Last time I had surgery the pain I experienced when I first got up was excruciating.
"This time I got up fine and with no pain on the Friday of the operation, which was great. The next day I was walking up and down the stairs and I was back home on the Sunday."
He used crutches for just a week, was cycling on an indoor bike within two-and-a-half weeks and cycled 40 miles outside within a month.
If he had had a hip replacement, the recovery alone would have been six to 10 days.
