Eastbourne mayor Mike Thompson will abseil over the side of the council offices for charity on Sunday.

The charity event is between 10am and 2pm and the town’s first citizen will be joined by a number of fellow intrepid abseilers hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for the mayor’s chosen charity this year Lark in the Park.

Among them will be Kelly Ancell and Marie Metcalfe from Ancells Estates in Eastbourne.

The mayor, a Liberal Democrat ward councillor for Hampden Park who has been mayor since May, said, “I chose to abseil as this will enable some 40 other volunteers to join me in raising funds for Lark in the Park.

“The area around the base of Eastbourne’s council offices on October 21 will become a sort of drop-in centre. I am really looking forward to it.”

He is also hoping more people with a head for heights will join him on the day providing they can raise the required amount of sponsorship.

Anyone who can raise £100 in sponsorship and the £30 participation fee can take part. For further information and to book a place for the abseil contact the mayor’s office on 415020 or email mayorsoffice@eastbourne.gov.uk

The mayor is also hoping people will go along and support the abseilers on the day.

All the money raised will go to Lark in the Park, an Eastbourne based charity set up in 2001 managed and run by volunteers.

It looks after local youngsters aged five to 25 with special needs and disabilities including Downs Syndrome, autism and Cerebral Palsy.

The first aim of the charity has reached fruition and from joining forces with the Variety Club of Great Britain, Lark in the Park have provided a minibus which is based at the South Downs School in Eastbourne.

Lark in the Park has also provided many holidays at various locations, which have been enjoyed by many young people, as well as holding events locally.
