Charity volunteers have been thanked for playing a part in last year’s Beachy Head Marathon.

After the successful event last October, organisers Eastbourne Borough Council have made donations to a range of local charities and organisations who have assisted in staging the UK’s largest off road marathon.

More than 150 volunteers support the marathon and every year donations are given to each organisation as a special thank you for their assistance with marshalling, first aid and safety provision for the 1,750 runners, joggers and walkers taking part.

Eastbourne mayor Mike Thompson said, “It is great to see charities benefiting from the growing interest in sport. The runners always appreciate the friendly support of our volunteers, and it is with their help that we can put on such a successful event and claim the Beachy Head Marathon as one of the best in the world.”

The success of the 2012 event has seen an increase of eight per cent on the overall donation fund and a total of £5,650 in donations has been awarded to Rotary Club of Hailsham, Eastbourne Sea Cadets Unit, Seaford Striders, Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards, St John Ambulance, Beachy Head Ramblers, HM Coastguard Eastbourne, HM Coastguard Birling Gap, Chestnut Tree House Hospice and Lark in the Park Charitable Trust.

Each year organisers have been able to donate funds generated by the marathon to those local volunteer groups involved with the event, and since its relaunch in 2002, more than £50,000 has been donated.

However with many participants also being sponsored to run, jog or walk the challenging 26 mile route, charities additionally receive more than £40,000 each year through sponsorship alone.

With some charities providing a handful of free places to runners raising valuable funds, last year saw one charity, Care for the Carers, raise more than £2,600 in donations alone.

The event is also supported by sponsors Bookers Wholesale and Eastbourne Motoring Centre.

The Beachy Head Marathon returns on Saturday October 26 2013 and entries are now open online atwww.beachyheadmarathon.org.uk.
