Marathon effort from young ladies
Alice Lowden and Charlotte Yates
Two former Eastbourne College pupils tackled all 26.2 miles of the Portsmouth Marathon to raise cash for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
Alice Lowden and Charlotte Yates not only finished second and third in the under-20 category and in the top 150 women overall in the race on December 23, but they also raised more than £1,260 for the hospice.
Both Alice and Charlotte were hampered by injury during the final four weeks of training but they still managed to run more than 400 miles in preparation for the event which took them round the edge of Portsmouth Harbour, out to Hayling Island and back again.
The area had been swamped with rain for days and a challenging course – which includes over a mile of slime-lined shingle complete with accompanying seaweed – was made all the more treacherous by never-ending puddles and great expanses of oozing clay.
It was certainly a tough challenge but the girls were delighted to complete it and grateful to their supporters who kept their spirits up during the last four miles, and to the organisers and marshals who offered everything from water and jelly-babies to tots of rum to help keep the runners’ spirits up along the way!
Having left Eastbourne College last summer, the girls are now set to complete their gap year by flying off to face new challenges abroad.
Alice is heading for Brisbane to coach in a school while Charlotte is shortly due to fly off to discover India.
The girls were running for Campaign Hospice Reach which aims to raise £5.3 million over the next two years.
A spokesperson for St Wilfrid’s said, “We congratulate Alice and Charlotte on their tremendous achievement and thank them for their great efforts.
“We certainly need all the support we can get on our campaign to transform end of life care for every person in our community.” Donations can still be made at http://www.justgiving.com/Charlotte-Yates-Alice-Lowden
