Man bought fake insurance certificate

Buying a fake insurance certificate on the internet and presenting it to police when asked for documentation has lost a 23-year-old man his licence.

Jonathan Miles, of South Cliff Avenue, faced two charges of driving without insurance and one of intent to deceive when he appeared before the town's magistrates on October 24.

Miles pleaded guilty to all three charges against him.

The court heard how the defendant was driving a red van down Gildredge Road in Eastbourne at around 10am on October 5.

Alison May, prosecuting, said that he was manoeuvring the vehicle and police officers stopped to tell him he could not park in that particular space.

She said, "Officers asked the defendant for his documentation and he went back to the vehicle and rummaged around in the van and then produced a certificate from Admiral."

Police believed the certificate to be a forgery and arrested Miles at the roadside.

Miles did a Google search for counterfeit forms and paid 10 for a fake insurance certificate to be sent through the post.

Alan Hobden, defending, said the red van did not belong to the defendant and was his mother's vehicle but he had not wanted to pay out on insurance because he plans to leave the country in February.

Mr Hobden said, "He could have scouted around and found an insurance provider that supplied policies for less than a year and he realises that this is what he should have done."

Miles was given six points and a 200 fine for driving without insurance on September 8 and a further six points and 200 fine for the offence on October 5.

He was ordered to pay a 100 fine for forging the insurance certificate and Miles will also pay a 15 surcharge and 60 in court costs.

He is banned from driving for six months.
