Man’s body found in flat strewn with bottles
A MAN who drank 120 units of alcohol each week – six times the recommended allowance – was found dead in his bed, an inquest has heard.
The decomposing body of Frenchman Jean Carmier was found by his landlady at the flat he lived at in St John’s Road, Eastbourne, in August last year.
She had called to collect his rent but discovered the factory worker dead in his bedroom.
At an inquest at Eastbourne last week, coroner Alan Craze recorded an open verdict into the death of the 56-year-old after hearing it was impossible to tell how he had died because his body was decomposed.
PC Thomas Thorpe was among the first officers on the scene when the alarm was raised and said it appeared Mr Carmier had been dead for some time.
The officer also said the flat was untidy with bottles and cans strewn around.
The inquest also heard the landlords, the Berenji family, had contacted environmental health because of the condition of the flat.
Mr Carmier’s GP in Eastbourne, Dr Tim Gietzen, said he had not seen his patient, a paranoid schizophrenic, since a mental health review when it was noted that Mr Carmier was drinking 120 units of alcohol.
The Government guidance is just 21 units a week for men and 14 for women.
Mr Carmier’s son, Robert, who lives in Brighton, also told the inquest that in the months leading up to his death his father had been struggling with alcohol
Recording an open verdict coroner Mr Craze said, “It is something of a mystery. What caused his death we shall never know.”
