SHOPPERS watched in horror as a man plunged to his death from more than 30ft up the Arndale Centre car park.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was seen to fall from the centre’s car park entry ramp onto the pavement below in the service road off Ashford Road yesterday morning (Thursday).

According to management at the popular shopping centre, the man had earlier been spotted on CCTV walking up the ramp.

A centre security guard was sent to investigate but before he could reach him, the man had climbed onto the protective wall and fallen.

Emergency services were called and paramedics tried desperately to save him but their efforts proved in vain.

A spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed the force had received a 999 call at 10.20am and said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A post mortem was due to take place at the Eastbourne DGH and an inquest into the death is already under way.

The road at the back of the Arndale Centre was closed for some time and the area was cordoned off as detectives tried to work out if the man had jumped or fallen.

Arndale Centre manager Bill Plumridge told the Herald yesterday, “Some of our security officers were attending a first aid course in the office and went immediately to offer assistance.

“Police and paramedics were called to the incident and despite spending over an hour trying to revive the man he was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.”
