Man dies after car driven over Beachy Head cliffs

The body of a man was discovered near the wreckage of a black Audi saloon at the base of the cliffs at Beachy Head on Sunday afternoon.

The man is believed to be 43 and from London and had been reported missing in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The car had plunged over the 400 feet cliffs and was lying on the beach below.

Both Eastbourne lifeboats were launched to assist Police and Coastguard.

According to the RNLI, one casualty was seen caught on the rocks half way down and there was concern that there may be another person trapped in the wreckage of the car.

With the inshore lifeboat unable to land because of the breaking surf, two crewmen, Peter Needham and Michael Wishman, swam ashore to check the car where they discovered there were no further casualties, while the Coastguard Cliff Rescue team recovered the casualty from the cliff top.

Police officers had been searching the East Sussex coast area for him since then. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

While his body was being recovered, rescue crews discovered the body of a second man, a 52-year-old from Oxfordshire who had been reported missing earlier this month.

The deaths are not linked.
