Man denies rape at crown court
A man has gone on trial at Lewes Crown Court accused of raping a woman in Eastbourne.
Anton Holden has denied charges of rape, sexual assault and assaulting a woman in September 2011.
The 40-year-old, who has been remanded in custody since being arrested for the alleged offences, told police officers the sex was consensual.
At the start of Holden’s trial on Monday morning Oliver Dunkin, prosecuting, said the woman was attacked and suffered bruising to her stomach and face.
“He threw her onto the bed and tried to stuff a blanket into her mouth to stop her screaming,” said Mr Dunkin.
“She managed to escape and run to a neighbours for help. She was distraught, in shock and in pain and police were called.”
Holden claims the woman agreed to sex.
The trial is continuing.
