Live music date in memory of cancer victim
AN EVENING of live music is being held this weekend to raise money in memory of a local musician who died of cancer.
Jonathan Ayres was 45 when he lost his battle with cancer on May 12 last year, leaving behind wife Sarah, step-daughter Emma and daughter Holly.
Friends and family lined up to pay tribute to the popular local and, shortly after his death, one of his closest friends, Mark Connell, decided to start raising some money in memory of his pal.
A charity gig was quickly organised at the Prince Albert on the High Street and, with the help of a host of local bands, the evening raised £1,124 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
And, such was the success of that first fundraiser, Mr Connell has decided to hold another, which will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at the same venue.
Mr Connell explained, “Not long after Jon passed away Sarah (his wife) asked me if I would help raise some money for St Wilfrid’s as the help and support she and Jon received during his battle against cancer was invaluable.
“In fact Sarah told me that she would have been unable to cope without their help and support.
“Well, the event I organised at the Prince Albert last year managed to raise £1,124 for the hospice so I decided that this year I would organise another event in honour of Jon and see if it is possible to raise some more money for the hospice.
“Local bands Rizen, Indigo and Bedraggled have all kindly offered to play at the Prince Albert and all proceeds are being donated to St Wilfrid’s Hospice.”
The music runs from 9pm until 1am and all are welcome.
