TWO thousand women will be walking, jogging and running 5k in Eastbourne on Sunday, June 3 (11am) as part of the nationwide Race for Life.

The race, in aid of Cancer Research UK and taking place at the Eastbourne Sports Park, will include cancer survivors and people taking part in memory or celebration of loved ones.

Among them will be 39-year-old Linda Carey, whose experience of cancer spurred her on to a complete life change.

Her husband, Steve, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2007. He was operated on the same day and continued with treatment at the Cancer Clinic in Brighton.

Five years later, 37-year-old Steve’s doing better than anyone could have predicted.

He and Linda are now the proud parents of two children Ryan, six, and Jack, four – both born while Steve was undergoing treatment. The couple vowed to start their lives afresh and between them over the next few years they lost a total of ten stone.

To keep fit they both attend a local gym and while Linda focuses on Zumba, Steve concentrates on mountain biking, fell running and is now training for a triathlon.

Linda gave up smoking in 2009 and a year later celebrated by taking part in her very first Race for Life.

Linda said, “It was the most emotional day of my life as all the training never prepares you for the enormity of the comradeship of strangers and the tears of reading people’s signs attached to them.

“This year is my third Race for Life event and I cannot wait!”

Linda also helps raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK at her workplace and Slimming Club.

“We are blessed that cancer touched us and we are the people we are now,” she added.

Organisers are hoping that participants at the Eastbourne event will raise £130,000.

There is still time to join the Eastbourne run at www.raceforlife.org or by calling 0871 641 1111.
