PEOPLE are being asked to dig deep to help the campaign to save the Beachy Head Lighthouse stripes.

Thousands of pounds have already been raised to repaint the iconic tower and fundraisers say one final push is needed to help them reach their £26,000 target.

The campaign was launched on Facebook last October and supported by the Eastbourne Herald and Eastbourne Rotary AM.

Lighthouse owners Trinity House said that because vessels now rely on satellite navigation equipment, the stripes were not necessary, and it could not justify the repaint job. The tower would therefore have to revert to its natural granite grey colour.

Last week the campaign – already supported by celebrities Eddie Izzard, John Craven and Griff Rhys-Jones – was given a £500 cash boost from Eastbourne resident William Colbourne.

That will go towards the pledge running by Eddie Izzard who has agreed to match pound for pound donations up to a maximum of £2,000.

Campaign organiser Shirley Moth said, “This donation was a fantastic boost to the campaign by William Colbourne who said he wished to support the campaign.

“He feels the lighthouse is part of England’s heritage and that its red and white stripes make it an iconic landmark known all over the world.

“We now just need more local people to dig deep and we will soon have reached our target.”

The campaign also looks set to be given a boost by the sale of mini lighthouses being sold by volunteers at the Beachy Head Countryside Centre.

The replica lighthouses are being sold at £2.50 with all the profit to the Keep the Beachy Head Lighthouse campaign.

Centre director Helen McCauley said, “We hope people will buy one of the mini lighthouses and raise a few pounds for the campaign.”

Campaigners hope to reach their £26,000 target in time to get the lighthouse painted next year. Further information and details on how to donate at www.keepthebeachyheadlighthousestripes.org.uk
