Lidl puts in third store plan

BUDGET supermarket Lidl is considering making a third attempt to get permission to build a store in Hailsham.

The German firm's plan to build a store on the Ropemaker Park industrial estate has twice been knocked back by officers at Wealden District Council.

But Lidl said it had 'worked hard' to address the reasons for refusal and is set to make a third bid to convince Wealden. It said a new store in the town could create up to 30 new full and part-time jobs.

Lidl's plans will be showcased its plans at a public consultation day next Tuesday evening (June 30), from 5pm until 8pm, at the Hailsham Community Centre in Vicarage Lane.

A spokesperson said, "This will give local residents the opportunity to see the revised proposals and speak to members of our development team.

"We have worked hard to address the reasons for refusal and have made several changes to this application.

"For example, we have moved the store closer to South Road, so that it is now in a similar position to the consented car showroom, which addresses the council's concern in respect of design and the introduction of a 'spatial void'.

"This application will be submitted once the feedback from the consultation day has been reviewed and once any possible amendments have been made.

"The store would bring 25 to 30 full- and part-time jobs to the local area and offer the residents of Hailsham increased choice and quality at discount prices."
