Laughter is the secret to reaching 100
An ‘amazing’ centenarian from Willingdon has said the secret to her longevity is laughter.
Kathleen Bradley celebrated her milestone birthday with friends and family at Eastbourne’s Grand Hotel recently.
She was born in Scarborough on October 10, 1912.
During the Second World War she went to work for the RAF where she was involved in clerical work.
While she was working for the RAF, Mrs Bradley met her husband-to-be Leonard and the couple married in 1944.
They retired to Eastbourne together in 1975.
Both Kathleen and Leonard were comedians during the war. Kathleen would entertain the troops by making them laugh and she maintains this is the secret to her longevity.
She and Leonard enjoyed 50 happy years of marriage before he died.
Patricia Pickery, her friend and carer, said, “She is full of fun and always joking.
“She never takes anything too seriously and I think that is what keeps her so young.”
Patricia described Kathleen as ‘an amazing woman’ and explained she was still living life to the full.
She said, “There is nothing wrong with her and she is not on any medication.
“She loves walking. We go for a walk around the lake in Hampden Park at least once a week and she likes to feed the ducks.
“She really is an amazing woman.”
Kathleen is still an active member of the RAF Club in Eastbourne, the civil service social club and the Masonic Club for widows.
Patricia says Kathleen still lives in her own home in Willingdon and shows no sign of slowing down.
She added, “Whenever you ask her what her secret is, she always says her long life is down to a good sense of humour.”
Patricia joined Kathleen’s friends and family at The Grand Hotel to celebrate her special birthday.
