The owners of the beleaguered Langney Shopping Centre are remaining tight-lipped about its future in the aftermath of the collapse of the roof.

The centre was declared dangerous by building control and is still closed while structural engineers complete their report.

The roof of the shopping centre caved in during the early hours of Thursday December 20 leaving a large hole above the square in the centre where customers of the Windmill Restaurant sit.

Experts say had it happened during the day shoppers would have lost their lives.

Paul Dunstall, assistant building control manager for East Sussex Building Control Partnership, said, “If this had happened during the day there would have been many fatalities.

“It would’ve been a tragedy and it would’ve made the national news.”

As it remained closed throughout the run up to Christmas – traditionally the busiest week of the year – traders were left counting the cost of the accident.

In addition thousands of people living in Langney who depend on the centre for their daily essentials have had to go further afield.

Tesco, the biggest employer in the centre ,has reallocated staff to other branches and is also running a shuttle bus for shoppers from the centre to the main Tesco store in Lottbridge Drove.

Owners London & Associated Properties PLC London said it could not comment on the future until the structural engineer’s report was completed.

The centre’s management has also been unavailable for comment.
