Land raise plans 'far from done deal'

PLANS to create large mounds of waste in the countryside alongside the A22 are 'far from a done deal', the county council has insisted.

Last week, more than 300 people turned out at a public meeting to air their views on the controversial 'land raise' proposals, which could see sites at Hellingly and Golden Cross used for dumping piles of rubbish.

Hailsham MP Charles Hendry has blasted the idea as 'completely out-of-date' and 'wholly inappropriate'.

But the county council said all views collated during the consultation period, including from 10 parish councils which called the public meeting, would be taken on-board before decisions are made.

A spokesperson said, "The consultation has now closed and we are pleased that there has been such a high level of response.

"The proposed Waste and Minerals Core Strategy is being prepared to deal with waste and minerals issues up to 2026 and it is important that it takes into account the views of communities and other stakeholders.

"The council is committed to reducing the landfill of waste through its policy of 'reduce, re-use and recycle'.

"The energy replacement facility (incinerator) at Newhaven will also make a substantial contribution to reducing landfill requirements by converting waste to energy.

"This is far from a 'done deal' and we will now be spending some time investigating the points that local people have raised."
