Jack Russells attacked boy, aged two
A HAILSHAM mum says her two-year-old son may be left with a permanent fear of dogs after he was attacked by three Jack Russells.
Kyle Bailey suffered cuts and grazes when he was jumped on by the dogs outside his home in Fletcher Close around 3.50pm last Monday (September 15).
Young Kyle was with his parents and older brother Bradley, six, when the dogs, who were being walked by their owner, leapt on him.
Mum Michelle West said, "He had just crossed the road, stepped on to the kerb and the dogs came out of nowhere.
"They jumped him and grabbed hold of the waistband of this trousers.
"They were all over his face and he was screaming his little heart out.
"They did bite him but luckily it was through the thickness of his belt."
Michelle said the attack lasted a couple of minutes before Kyle's parents managed to pull him away from the dogs.
Police were called and a paramedic also attended the scene but Kyle didn't need hospital treatment.
Michelle added she was disappointed by the dogs' owner who she claims didn't do enough to stop the attack.
She said, "She didn't seem to be pulling them back very hard — she was just tugging at the lead while insisting they don't bite."
Kyle is currently recovering at home but Michelle said she didn't know how he might react to the animals in the future as he hasn't come into contact with other dogs since the attack.
She said, "He keeps saying to everyone that this doggy had hurt him and it scared him.
"He always used to have such interest in dogs.
"He would always approach other people's dogs with caution because I have taught him he needs to ask if he wants to stroke them.
"But you don't know how he might react now — he might be scared of them forever."
Police confirmed to the Gazette they had looked into the incident and passed it on to Wealden District Council's dog warden.
