Human remains found in woodland
Remains of a human body have been found in woodland near to a Seaford car park.
A dog walker made the discovery in woodlands near the High and Over car park on Friday at around 7pm and alerted police.
Officers confirmed that the remains were human and that they appear to have been in the undergrowth for some time. One line of enquiry is that the body could be that of a missing person.
The car park is situated on the road between Seaford and Alfriston.
Detective Inspector Ian Williams, who was leading the Sussex police investigation at the weekend, said the remains were skeletal and the clothing was also very badly decomposed.
Police, who are not treating the death as suspicious, are continuing to establish the identity of the body and a post mortem was due to take place yesterday (Tuesday).
Dog walker Marian Rimington, who lives in Alfriston, said, "I used to run up there a lot and I saw the police there the other day.
"I'm amazed that it's only been discovered now because it is so busy up there and when the wind is right all the paragliders go there."
Seaford mayor Councillor Tracy Willis said she was shocked to hear the news and added, "My thoughts are with whoever found the remains.
"I have every confidence that the police will do their best to ensure this is dealt with sympathetically.
"I was really shocked when I heard about this. Until we find out the facts it remains very much a mystery.
"The sad fact is that this person is from a family somewhere."
