How do you fancy being king or queen for a day?

TOMORROW (Saturday May 19) is the last day for prospective Eastbourne Carnival king and queens to come forward.

The Eastbourne Herald photographer will be in the Arndale Centre outside Top Shop between 10am and 1pm taking photographs of people who want to enter the competition to find an Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival King and Queen who will lead the seafront event on Saturday June 2.

Any person, male or female, of any age can enter the competition by having their photograph taken. All the entries will be judged next week and the winner announced in next Friday’s Herald.

Meanwhile, the carnival is to have a new start time and marshals are needed to help make sure the procession goes off without a hitch.

Originally, floats, marching bands and walking entries were due to head off from the Sovereign Centre at 7pm but because so many are taking part, organisers are moving the start time to 6pm.

Pageant master for the carnival Dave Cooper said the response had been so overwhelming and with 40 vehicles and more than 1,800 people in the parade, it would start an hour earlier.

“We are victims of our own success,” said Dave.

“The people of Eastbourne have spoken very loudly and indicated they really want this carnival.

“We have to respect the professional experience of the emergency services who have helped us throughout the planning stages of the carnival and who have indicated that an earlier start makes sense.”

Dave is also hoping people will come forward and volunteer to be marshals on the night of the carnival.

“We need to provide sufficient volunteer marshals for the event and would ask folk to come forward.

“If they would be able to make themselves available for a couple of hours of training on Monday May 21 at Kings Church between 7pm and 9pm and then on June 2 from 4pm-9.30pm to act as marshals in the carnival.

“If people can visit www.carnivalhelp.com the details and sign up options are all available online. It is set up as an event so people will need to ‘register’ tickets in order to volunteer.”
