Hopes fade of finding sailor who went overboard alive

Hopes are fading of finding a sailor lost overboard in gail force winds off Sovereign Harbour alive.
Eastbourne all-weather lifeboat (ALB) was launched at half-past midnight on Tuesday after a crewman fell from a passing tug, five miles off shore. The tug, called Endurance, had two people on board and was sailing from Dover to Brighton with a 60ft motor cruiser under tow. The tow was lost and the crewman was trying to re-establish it when he fell overboard. Eastbourne ALB was launched following a Mayday distress call and Newhaven ALB and the Coastguard Rescue helicopter also took part in the search. Mobile units from the HM Coastguard joined teams at first light.
Alan Novis, press officer for Newhaven Lifeboat, said, “I think the likelihood at this time of finding him alive is really zero unfortunately. Our sympathies go out to the family as this must be a stressful time for them.”
