Homeless day centre needs new name

WORK is progressing well on a new day centre for homeless people in Eastbourne.

A team of volunteers is currently putting the finishing touches to the former Foresters Hall in Langney Road, which has been taken over by the Salvation Army and will be used as drop in centre for homeless men, women and families.

Now, those behind the centre are hoping members of the public will come up with a name for the building and have also issued a wish list of items desperately needed.

Pauline Peagam, the Salvation Army's community development worker, said, "We want to give it a new name rather than just call it in the Salvation Army Centre."

Anyone with suggestions can drop their ideas in to the Salvation Army citadel in Langney Road or call on 640382 before the closing date of Friday February 12.

In recent weeks the building has been converted and has a new kitchen, bathroom and shower with disabled facilities, an office and lounge.

Members of the Youth Offending Team along with other volunteers have been decorating with paint donated by Brewer and Son of Eastbourne and items needed include a washing machine, carpet and vertical blinds.

The centre is an extension of the invaluable work the Salvation Army does in Eastbourne.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays a two-course dinner for more than 50 homeless people is served and sandwiches and hot drinks are also distributed.
