High court date set for firefighters legal battle

The families of two firefighters killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory will next week launch a High Court fight for massive compensation from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Geoff Wicker, 49, and Brian Wembridge, 63, died in the blast at Marlie Farm near Lewes in December 2006.

In July 2011, High Court judge, Mr Justice Macduff, said their widows and another 13 firefighters and police officers who were hurt were entitled to payouts from Alpha Fireworks Ltd, the company that operated from the site.

The widows of the two men, plus nine other firefighters and four police officers, are also suing East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at London’s High Court, before Mr Justice Irwin, claiming it too was to blame for the deaths and injuries.

A ten day hearing will begin at the London court next week.
